❝ Growing out of modest beginnings, theatre in the Ghetto developed into a wide-ranging and multi-faceted art. Like other types of artistic activities, drama reflected the underlying human aspiration for purposeful self-assertion. Its need was perceived in the Terezin camp much more urgently and powerfully than under normal circumstances. Theatre, which invariably tends to transform and present human destiny and stories into ‘here and now,’ grew to be a forum for public meetings, a venue where spectators shared their impressions of an artistic reality whose very nature was opposed to the actual reality enforced on them. Even though the Nazis did their best to exploit theatre in Terezin for their own propaganda purposes in presenting the Ghetto to the outside world, thanks their aesthetic, humanistic and resistance values and messages, theatre performances succeeded in creating islands of spiritual freedom in the Ghetto. ❞
- A beautiful description from the exhibit in the Magdeburg Barracks in Terezin. As a theatre-lover, I found this particularly inspiring and moving.
