Last night, as a sort of celebration of the end of our Intensive Czech course, our group saw the opera The Magic Flute at the Theatre of the Estates in Old Town. I’ve never seen an opera (aside from PBS-televised versions of Aida…yep), but as an avid theatre-goer, I was pretty excited. Sadly, it fell below my expectations - I could best compare it to an excellent high school production of an opera. It was definitely an unconventional interpretation of this classic, which is fine - but combined with lackluster performances (besides the Winter Queen, who was fierce) and potentially the most confusing choreography I’ve ever seen, I was unimpressed. The theatre itself was breath-taking.
